2-DAY-CLIMB CARIHUAIRAZO (5.018 m / 16,463 ft)

Carihuairazo is one of the not too challenging climbs of a mountain with more than 5.000 m (16,000 ft) height. The tour is technically not difficult, has only a small snow/glacier section (depending on weather conditions), but some acclimatization and fitness are required. Carihuairazo is a perfect acclimatization tour, preparing oneself for Cotopaxi, Cayambe or Chimborazo.

A very special thing on Carihuairazo is the weather. From October to January is the best season. Nevertheless the chance to get wet on Carihuairazo is big - so be prepared.

The tour can be arranged for any day.

Good to know about Carihuairazo (5.018 m / 16,463 ft)

Carihuairazo is Chimborazo's small neighbour. The name originates from the Quichua language and contains as elements: man, snow and wind. Carihuairazo is a great climb if the weather is nice, like every mountain, but as the name indicates, winds can be strong and snow or rain are frequent companions on a Carihuairazo climb. Its proximity to Chimborazo makes it a perfect option as preparation and acclimatization for climbing Chimborazo. And at the end of the day, on the mountains there is no bad weather, there is only bad equipment. So make sure a good rain coat is in your back bag.

Indian Mythology

The legend says, that Carihuairazo and Altar mountains lost a fight against Chimborazo in a romantic quarrel about the love and grace of mama Tungurahua. As a result, the crater of Carihuairazo and Altar got destroyed. This is the explanation why both of the mountains have their current form.

Video of a great climb in October 2016

The weather conditions by end of October 2016 were perfect, not only on Carihuairazo but also on Chimborazo and Tungurahua. Carihuairazo itself had a nice snow cover which made the ascent very smooth. Usually there is only very little snow and almost no glacier, but quite a lot of loose rock and sand instead. Have a look at the video below. Having seen this, it's definitely worthwhile to give it a try and pray for good weather conditions.
